In 1745 Caspar
Wistar transferred 100 acres of land to the people of Tulpehocken so they could
build a place of worship and create a cemetery. One of the requirements
of the deed called for one red rose to be given each year to the descendants
of the Wistar family, a tradition which is continued to this day on the
second Sunday of June.
Today we view the rose as a symbol of Messianic Hope, Love, our Lord or his nativity, Mary the mother of our Lord, Paradise, and beauty.
